    Great, when it operates….

To be brief, I bought 3 of these at one time. For the first month, they worked perfectly. Then, in the middle of the night, one of then, like other reviewers stated, started beeping and flashing “P1” on the display screen. According to the manual, this indicates that the bottom condensate tray is full of water… So I emptied it. Two hours later, same thing happened. So I emptied it. Then, 1/2 hour later, same thing. In order for a portable AC to function without regular emptying, there is a part inside called a “slinger fan” that is designed to throw water from the condensate tray onto the condenser so it could be superheated and turned into steam and evacuated out of the exhaust hose. This stopped working.I called Midea support and they claimed that the AC is operating as it should and would require regular emptying on humid days. Keep in mind that I bought three of these units and they are all kept on the same level of the same house and set to the same temperature, yet have dry condenser trays, requiring no emptying.Midea told me that they would elevate my support request to another level and I would hear back by phone within 2 days. It’s been a week and I’ve heard nothing. So, when they operate, they are so cold, so quiet, and so nice, but getting 2 good ones out of 3 is not good odds. They are ridiculously heavy (about 100 pounds), so keep that in mind if you have to return one.

    Sencillamente perfecto

Bastante contento.

It is very quiet and newer dual hose in hose technology

I’ve had this unit for only 3 weeks now and so far so good. I will try and write another one after a few months. What’s good about it is the vents that blow out the cold air are a wide output and plus it has a swivel that blows the air up and down so it makes the air go in all directions and if you don’t like that you can just set it on One Direction. All the other units that I looked at only had it blowing up from the top of the AC unit which to me defeats the whole purpose of getting to lower levels of the room where you will be sitting or lying down. The compressor is very quiet and so is the fan. It has a sleep mode that a lot of units do not have and it saves on electricity. The new design of a dual hose unit that is two hoses in one is genius! It comes with an adapter that snaps right in and you can keep the hose straight and not have to twist it. Now everybody complains about the window assembly kit and what a pain in the butt it is but that is like that on any portable AC unit you buy. The plastic screw posts don’t push in all the way but just enough for you to push in for it to stop the panels from sliding and I recommend you put those plastic babies on both sides of the sliding panel. You will also need to use tape like clear packing tape or duct tape to the back side of the panel to keep it from loosening or sliding down. I have a Long window height and there was extra extended panels that made it go all the way to the top so that was great. You will notice a tiny bit of some air gaps around the adapter clamps and the hose but it’s negligible. When I did research there were only two models out there that were dual hose in hose units, the Midea and the Dreo. They both look very similar except for one important factor is that the Dreo blows cold air from the top and doesn’t have a big vent that swivels like the Midea, and I liked it because it was black and modern looking I used to have a white one and it eventually turned an ugly yellow color. The one thing I can say that can use Improvement are that the LED panel is hard to read on the unit itself at night time. It should have had much more backlight and the letters are hard to read and I fear as the unit gets older that the display is going to be harder to see the white letters. Also the remote control back light so you can see the display on the remote control longer is always turning off after just a few seconds and doesn’t give you enough time to see the letters or numbers. But I do keep it near my bed on the table so that the AC unit can get the proper temperature of the room from the remote control. I almost always use the Midea app to control the AC unit from my living room so I don’t have to get up. This unit has great blowing distance and I can feel the air blowing from all the way across the room and it also cools off my kitchen as well as my living room. I usually keep it on 77 and it quietly goes low when it reaches that temperature and then turns off and then automatically turns on when it needs to and it doesn’t make a loud sound when it turns on it’s a very nice gradual sound. I haven’t gotten my electric bill yet but I am expecting it to be lower than it was with a single hose unit that I had. When you get the unit shipped make sure to have paid for the $10 charge for them to deliver it into your home as it is 72 lb. To open the box cut off the straps and then open the top and take out the attachments and then lift the Box straight up and it will separate the bottom part and you can lift the whole box above and out of the unit. It caught me by surprise because I was wondering how in the world am I going to lift a 72 lb unit all the way up from a tall box. The units specs are excellent it has 12,000 BTU and SACC of 10,000 which is more energy efficient. I also bought the 4-year Asurion protection plan which gives me great piece of mind. I hope this helps you all that are considering this great portable AC unit. And please reply if you have any questions or comments about my review:-)

Summer nights never felt so cool

I sleep hot regardless of the season. My options were to buy a huge fan and place it on me at all times during the night with a sheet as a blanket or just suffer through it. It took my bed being soaked with my sweat several summers in a row for me to give up and look into an air conditioner. I didn’t want anything super amazing as the room I sleep in is fairly small. I did want a dual hose design since I’ve heard they’re better at removing water from the system but it wasn’t a deal breaker if I didn’t get that. After much looking I came upon this unit. It has a remote, it works with Alexa, I can control the unit with my smartphone, it has the dual hose system but most importantly it’s energy efficient. You see I used to have a hotel grade air conditioner and it ran most of the time due to the room it was in having no air flow. That unit was a champ as it kept that large room chilly all the time. Though it used a lot of power. It added over a hundred dollars to our power bill every month and I just couldn’t deal with that again. Now this unit is much better but it only runs when I sleep and I clean the filter on the regular to keep it from using too much power. It hasn’t broke my bank yet so that’s always a plus. Oh, and did I mention this unit is a beast at cooling? I know I said the room is small but I’d never expect this unit to cool my bedroom in less than a couple of minutes like this unit does. Most of the time I forget to turn it on via my phone and it doesn’t really matter. I enter my room, hit the on button and get into bed and within minutes I’m nice and chilly for a good nights sleep.I have very little to complain about with this air conditioner. It checks off a lot of boxes I had for what I wanted and then some. The only thing I can say is that it’s a bit noisy. I don’t see that as a bad thing cause most units are loud. Actually I don’t know if I could sleep without the noise now. But if you have to have silence in order to drift off to dreamland then maybe find something else. The amount of features this unit has at a fairly decent price accompanied with it being energy efficient should be a top contender for most. Highly recommend.Whoops, almost forgot. My unit was missing the adapter that hooks to the plastic hose so to have water drawn away from the unit and into a better place. I contacted Midea for a replacement part and was told they don’t carry certain parts and my only option was to send the entire unit back for a replacement. This was well after I had installed the unit. I, like the adult I am, called them stupid and argued their flawed logic. Sending a heavy piece of tech back because they forgot to add a small and almost weightless piece of plastic was asinine. Why put me and the poor delivery people through something so frustrating over something so simple. That conversation went on for too long and got me nowhere. In the end I didn’t need the part but I highly suggest anyone buying this to check every part to make sure it’s all there cause from what I can tell they don’t carry parts that a normal company would.

Best portable air conditioner I’ve ever seen!

This is the first portable air conditioner I’ve seen that actually works! I’ve had several portable ACs over the years and none came close to matching a window unit or central AC of the same BTU, and all of the portables were extremely noisy. I vowed never to buy a portable again but had no choice in my current apartment. I had heard that inverter AC’s were better but I am truly amazed at how well this unit performs. Not only does it cool a hot room quickly, it’s as quiet as the best window AC I ever had. AND it uses a fraction of the electricity of a regular unit!! It’s a marvel in my book. My only complaint is that the hose/window kit adapter doesn’t work well with casement windows (though I think it would probably be fine in a double hung window). For a casement window 38″ high you will need a long support or brace to prevent the adjustable panels from bowing inward and breaking the seal. The casement hose adapter also does not fit well into the vertical panels and tended to pop out before heavy duty tape was applied all around it which seems to have solved the problem. The only other issue beside the casement window problem is that the window kit is black plastic, as are the insulation pieces for the adjustable panels. Since many windows (like mine) get direct sunlight, black plastic on the exterior window kit is a pretty obvious design flaw, as it will clearly soak up heat and lead to warping. I solved this problem with a can of white spray paint but it is not a problem I would’ve had to deal with if the parts had been made of white plastic. If it weren’t for these quibbles, I would give the unit five stars. This is still a fantastic AC. It has been several months now and I still cannot believe how well the unit works and how quiet it is. From now on, if I ever have to buy another AC, it must use this inverter technology. It’s dramatically better. Highly recommend this AC with inverter technology.

Important ADVICE about installation -; 09-02-2023 update about CONDENSATION

Somehow people seem to get these things installed. But I feel the fit into a sliding window is really lacking. (Same lack also exists with a hung window.)I worked out a couple of things that might be useful to other buyers and offer them here in the spirit of “save-money-when-you-DIY”.The foam strips are flimsy and fragile. I had an Under Door Seal on-hand and was inspired(?) to use it to seal along the edge of the sliding window. A similar result could also be achieved with pipe insulation. Pictures posted.Either of these products can be trimmed with simple tools (hacksaw blade, razor knife, scissors) to fit in the cracks and gaps around the window frame, window and/or window sliders.I might also try to use some spray can Plasti-Dip (it is a rubbery coating) on the foam strips. I can’t understand how Midea gets away with such a bare bones level of edge sealing solutions.Frankly, the big hose and connectors and all of the panels have a rather ghastly and stark appearance. Most wives will find them quite unappealing, but the cool temps that the AC unit provides will possibly make the tradeoff work…?Update on 09-02-2023 after a few weeks of use:The humidity in room where we installed the unit had increased noticeably. Had been around 40%, but went up into the high 60%. So we set the machine to Dry Mode. The outside of the unit was sweating a lot after that change. I read through numerous reviews here.Claims that the condensation gets evacuated out the exhaust hose were reassuring (and made some sense). BUT …. some commenters said that the unit has to be tilted BACK to drain. Well, they are CORRECT. I already had the clear plastic tube in place, and it was set to drain to a plastic jug.Once I put a wood block under the front of the unit I was amazed at the amount of water that came out, and continues to come out. So we will run this for a while longer (with Dry Mode off) and see what happens.Honestly, I am really undecided on whether to keep this Midea Portable AC.

Worked well when it did what it was supposed to…

Having used this AC for around a month now I’ve been able to experiment will all the features. I’ll put a detailed list of my findings below:THE REMOTE:It has an LCD screen that is backlit, however it’s only when pushing a button and it turns off rather quickly. The buttons themselves don’t have a backlight as they’re coated in a green glow in the dark solution instead. I’ve never seen it glow bright enough to read in a dark room though, so you still need a light to operate the remote. The remote is also the only way to enable the “Comfort Sense” feature (using the remotes thermostat instead of the AC unit itself to prevent it form prematurely turning on/off when it reaches the set temp). The AC will beep when you turn it on, but there’s no way to tell if it’s actually working or not because the AC has no indicator on it. This is a problem because the remote will show the Comfort Sense icon on indefinitely going forward, but you’ll never know if the AC is using it. The best you can do is disable it and reenable it each time you turn on the AC so it will at least beep. The remote is not in sync with the AC, or the apps settings. If you change a setting on one, it will not change the remote. This is annoying because if you adjust the fan on the AC for example, and then use the remote, it will continue to show the old speed unless you cycle though the speeds on the remote and get it where you want it again. This also applies to changing any settings with the app as well. The remote is white. Not that it’s a big deal. But the AC is black. So if it matters to you then keep that in mind.THE APP:There’s actually two apps you can use with this AC. The Midea Air app and the MSmartLife app. Both are developed by Midea and offer similar functionality. However, there are some minor differences. The Midea Air app seems to have an issue with the “Schedules” feature (allows you to set on/off times). It hasn’t worked for any of the scheduled times I set. It also shows the “Outside” and “Inside” temps at the top, but I’m not sure where the temps are coming from. The outside temp seems to be especially off. The MSmartLife app schedules do work though it also shows the humidity along with the outside and inside temps, unlike the Midea Air app. But, the Midea Air app allows you to pick louver positions instead of just starting and stopping it where you want it.Both apps include the same features that the AC and the remotes have on them, with the exception of Comfort Sense. But they also include a “Boost” mode that’s not on the remote or the AC. As far as what I can tell, it simply puts the fan at 100% speed and nothing else. When asking Google to turn on the AC, I would often get a response that the AC could not be reached. This is something that happened with both apps.THE AC:The built in hose extends to about 4′ in length. The included bracket is sturdy, but wide. If you’re using it on a vertical window, keep in mind that the bracket included to allow this does not seal well at all. There will be lots of air leakage. The product pages makes the claim that the unit is 42 dB. But the box says 44 dB. I cannot confirm if it’s close to that or not. But what I can say is it would only be that quiet when the inverter is restricting as much power as it can and the fan speed is set to low. When it’s running “normally” then it’s significantly louder than that.Speaking of the inverter. In my experience, the AC doesn’t run at “full power” very long, if at all. I’m not really sure if that’s because I got a bad egg or if it’s just an engineering issue. The AC seems to cycle between 300-1350 watts. Most of the time it’s between 900-950 watts even when I’m trying to get it to run at full power. After it gets close to the set temp it will cycle down and settle at around 300 watts consistently unless it cant keep the temp and needs to cycle back up.There have been times where the AC simply ran at full power and then turned off when it reached the set temp. I’m not sure why it did that as then it would defeat the purpose of having the inverter at that point.I never had to drain the AC when running in cool mode, and no water would come out when I attempted to. However, there’s still plenty of water in the tray that can spill when tipping the unit. So keep that in mind.My particular unit would make a kind of loud and annoying chirping sound when running in the lower power modes. It would also make a smacking noise when the louver would hit the bottom of it’s swing cycle. After about 3 weeks of use, the unit simply did not turn on one day and I had to return it.

Quiet but a pain to put in

OK. First the good news. This thing is pretty quiet — quieter, anyway, than the portable we had before (aka R2D2) but low and medium fan you can have a normal conversation. Not yet tried it in hot weather (3 days for a hot spell to start) so I’ll update when that happens. I also like the rotating vent, the auto temp which will set the temp for the control vs. the machine location, and overall controls. The bad news is it’s incredibly heavy (~90 lbs) but I’m biased by having to haul it up 2 flights of stairs… . The other major downside is installing it in a ~72″ sliding glass door. The panels are only about 63″ total. Not yet gotten to a workaround but will have a piece of plexiglass cut to fit the rest as I did with our other one (see update & video). And those panels aren’t easy to install vertically. Just labeling on each panel for what fits with what would be incredibly helpful. Also, the plastic pins that hold the sections (and they don’t actually hold them, they just keep the attached section from sliding further) are knobbed on the outside which blocks a smooth seal being made by the door closing to hold the panels in place. True, there’s foam you can add but making those pins flush or installed from the inside would solve that.More: the panels and the tubing pop out pretty easily when you don’t want them to, so I taped everything with gorilla tape. Some better bolt/nut combos or screws would solve this. Even better would be just two pieces telescoped, so you only have to slide one out to fit. Good plastic material, though, just more than a little loose with all the pieces to put a long section together. Also, this is much bigger than I thought it would be, so that’ll take some getting used to. Looks nice though. But, the big advantage for us is the cooling power (advertised, not tried yet) and the quiet fan on low. High is maybe a bit more than we want but still tolerable to get things cool, then go to auto or low.Hot all next week so I’ll update it then. (6/4/22)OK. Update 7/4/22 with some hot weather. Still happy with it. Very quiet though my wife still finds it kinda noisy on high but dB app on phone shows a consistent 30 – 40 dB. Still, you can easily listen to TV or have a conversation even when it’s on high. During 96 deg heat, I kept it set to 72 and the 3 open rooms kept to 75 – 77. Next: as mentioned, the 63″ insert doesn’t work for a 72″ sliding glass door, so I got a piece of 1/4″ poplar plywood and used that above and below the vent piece, getting rid of the rest of the plastic parts altogether. Again, the tube is taped into the vent piece because it pops out really easily. A clear sheet of plexiglass would be better but that’s what I’ve got for the moment. Glued foam around the edges for better seal. As I mention in the video, use open cell (soft) foam and not closed cell. The latter doesn’t compress. Back to the hardware store but it’s fine for the moment!

Enfría bien y no hace mucho ruido

    Terrible and expensive….

This review is for the Midea Duo. I bought this because I needed a portable AC for one of the bedrooms in my condo because the central air is inadequate. I especially wanted a smart AC so that I could use it with my Alexa ecosystem. Unfortunately, despite the good looks, quiet operation and good build quality, this thing has some major shortcomings that make it unusable and a complete waste of money. For starters, I received it with one of the tabs used to hold the hose in place on the window slider broken. Therefore, I needed a replacement part but Amazon doesn’t carry parts, so they had to send me a while new unit so that I could return the unit with the broken part. This delayed its use. Amazon was good about it so I don’t have any complaints there. The first major issue I have is with the window slider itself, a part that must be used in order to use the AC. For starters, you’d expect a $600 AC to come with high quality accessories but this part is cheaply made, flimsy and thin with absolutely no insulation properties at all. Furthermore, once assembled the sides are not flat, so you are left with gaps between the flat surfaces of the window and the sliders. They give you foam tape to adhere to the edges but this is inadequate. You’re left with a window insert that not only gets hot, but also lets bugs in and sound/ outside noise. The other issue with the slider is that for some stupid reason, they placed the hole for the exhaust hose very close to one edge. Its so close that when you use the sliding window adapter, it hits the sill and cannot snap into place. You have to build it out on that sure to get it to work. Why wouldn’t they just have centered it!? Furthermore, the hose is huge, probably twice the width of standard units and it’s unwieldy, so as gentle as I was being with this thing, one of the tabs broke (again!) and now it won’t connect properly … I had to glue it on with ABS cement so it doesn’t pull out. Unfortunately, due to the uncommon shape of the hose, you cannot upgrade to something else and you are left trying to modify it. Fine, I took two 1×2” wooden rails and created a box to support the sliders and added styrofoam to insulate it.Unfortunately, the second major problem is that this unit does nothing for the humidity while in AC mode because it reuses the condensation to make it more efficient… but, even though I have this thing keeping the room at 68 degrees, it jacked the humidity up to 84%! So the air is really dense and because of this it’s uncomfortable and useless! Unfortunately because of all the time it took to get this thing situated, Ive missed the return window by several days and now I’m out $600!I highly recommend staying away from this product. I really wanted to love it but instead I loathe it!Pros: good build quality of the AC unit itself, wifi and smart app enabled, quiet, blows a good amount of air.Cons: huge unwieldy exhaust hose, cheaply made and poorly designed hose adapter, cheaply made and poorly designed window sliders.

I’ve had 3 Portable A/C THIS ONE WAS THE EASIEST TO SET UP BY A LONG SHOT

This is our 3rd Portable A/C. The first one which was a cheaper unit (single hose) worked well (even if inefficient…) and lasted at least 12 years (not sure, because it was my husband’s mother’s before she died, we used it 10 years). Bought a Whynter dual hose second and returned it in a couple of days in July of 2022. There was no way to run the fan continuously in cooling mode. It’s not efficient if the cool air is not moving. Bought this one, and we are happy with it. I have a couple of critiques, but overall, we are very happy.Pros: With the weather stripping provided, and the thick window panels, and only one combination hose, it was much easier to set up than one with two individual hoses going in. Also, another bonus of the combination hose line is that the individual hoses are wrapped inside the hose that makes them one, so it’s better insulated, because the exhaust hose is always hot. NOTE: The remote IS THE THERMOSTAT. You have to located the remote in the room you are using the A/C unit, whether you are using the remote or not. We are just mounting a wall remote pocket on the opposite wall of the room, and that’s where it lives, so it does not get lost or knocked off a table or something. The fan has 4 speed settings, which is great, and you can hold the fan selector button down for 3 seconds with the A/C set to cooling and the fan will run continuously, and you can select the speed of the fan to run with cooling. It’s too bad it’s not automatically included in cooling, but at least you can make it work, which was a deficiency of the Whynter Dual Hose 14,000 BTU model. The Midea is lighter weight than any of the others we have owned so it was easy to unbox and easy to move and it has handles on the side to pull it or push it, and the Whynter had none. Again, I can’t believe how easy it was to set up and the provided insulation has sealed up my window opening from hot drafts from the outside and insects. The condenser is quiet and there’s no “CLUNK” when it kicks on. It does not wake me up at all cycling off and on, like our first one did. I have not gotten a power bill yet, but I suspect with the inverter technology, the constant fan and the dual hose and better window insulation, my power bill will be reasonable. If you are reading this beyond August 15th 2022, and I have not updated my comments saying otherwise about our bill, presume that was the case. Now for the suggested improvements:1) While the dual hose was so much easier to manage during installation, you have zero choice where to set the machine and it sticks out from the wall further than other models with individual hoses. You will need to set the machine DIRECTLY in front of the window vent attachment, parallel with the wall and you can’t rotate the A/C once it’s connected. So there are pros and cons to this combined hose set-up.2) The LED light should be red, not blue. I know everyone thinks blue is the “cool thing” right now, but blue and white light excite your brain and make it think it’s daylight. Red light (like a sunset) signals to your brain it’s night time, creating an environment where your mind calms down and you will fall asleep easier. Our bed and bed platform are sitting on the floor and that means our bed is low, so when we are lying on it, we are lower than the top of the A/C and the blue light is not in our eyes. I would need to put painters tape over it, if our bed was higher to block the light. The light does dim on the machine when you put it on “Sleep” Cycle using the remote, but you cannot have the fan run continuously on sleep cycle, which is really stupid. Especially for Perimenopausal and Menopausal women who have night (the most common time for women…) hot flashes and who need that cool air blowing on them to cool back down quickly so they are not awake in the wee hours of the night. You can tell with was designed by men. Serious design flaw.3)The directions for assembling the window panels were useless. There are 4 panels, two longer (one is the vent connector panel), and 2 shorter ones. They are directional, some of the panels slide inside the others and some slide on top of others, so it limits the combinations of configurations. It worked out very well for my side sliding, 48″ window height (for the frame, 47″ 1/16″ for the interior where the panel sits). I used 2 longer ones, including the one with the vent on the bottom and one small one. The hardware included in this A/C kit, had 3 self-tapping short metal screws and 8 plastic tabs in a “screw like shape, but with snap-in tension on the bottom. The directions say to connect the panels using “bolts.” Midea apparently does not know the difference between Bolts, screws or plastic push tabs. Since the panels have rows of holes for screws going down both sides of the panels, it would seam they intended for you to use the plastic push tabs to jam in the holes, just by the number of them provided. But you need to put the last piece of hardware in your panels while they are in position in the window and jamming those plastic tabs in (much less taking them out when you need to remove the panel) would be 10X harder than using the metal screws. Two of the metal screws were for double hung windows which are wood framed to install a provided window lock. Since I did not need those because we have slider windows, I just used the 3 metal screws only on the frame side and they hold well enough and were easy to screw in place once I had set the panel in the window and snugged it up. I have no idea what the extra 1 metal screw was for, but I made it work.3) There are 3 different kinds of insulation that come with this unit. There are thin, self-sticking insulation strips, not sticky thicker strips and flat sticky insulated panels to stick on the face of the plastic window plate. First, the sticky strips are a F*cking mess. DO NOT STICK THEM TO YOUR WINDOW, they will be hell trying to get it off. They disintegrate as you put them on. I had the material stuck to my fingers, stuck in my hair, and it’s gooey and just a mess. I stuck one strip, pulling the sticky side tape back slowly as I stuck it on the Midea provided panel as I went and it was still a mess. I ended up just stuffing the other sticky strip in my window jams on the other side of the panel WITH THE BACKING STILL ON. The non sticky thicker strips were great for stuffing between my open window panes on the outside to keep spiders out, and reduce warm air getting in. The flat insulation panels I was afraid of having the same mess as the sticky strips, so I only cut the corners of the sticky backing on the flat panels and that was enough to stick them to the plastic window plate. Proceed with caution using the sticky insulation.4) There are gaping holes to let air in where the dual hose vent connects to the vent outlet on the window panel. The large holes are the result of the way Midea designed the hose to clamp into the vent outlet. I can’t believe they went to so much trouble to provide the customer with all this insulation, and yet I had to use tape to cover these holes. If I had used the provide sticky insulation strips, the clips would be a mess when trying to remove the hose from the window. Surely they could provide an upgraded clip in system for the hose that sealed it, rather than making huge air holes from the outside. Serious design flaw.Overall, I am happy with this unit, and recommend it. I have had it a week and it’s ran nonstop and I am cool and comfy in the evenings with the fan moving air around the room continuously. I live in California, in the Sacramento Valley where we get 100+ F. degree weather and sometimes, it does not cool down at all a night, so some cooling is essential and we don’t have any other A/C in our home. We are considering buying a Midea mini-split in the fall so this was a way for use to test their technology without the huge expense and with lower risk. Time will tell, and I will update my review if I become unhappy with it for sure.

    Fantastic

This AC is absolutely fantastic! The only problem is the hose will NOT stay clipped into the window piece it keeps falling. I had to screw a couple brackets in place to hold it there. For the money spent, you’d expect better quality. Other than that, I am amazing by the Effie my and quietness. Contrary to other acs this one maintains a temperature instead of up and down. It stays on at idle instead of on full and completely off. So it makes it comfier. I wish I only bought these for the whole house!

UPDATE – Will Customer Service ever call me back? Broken clips won’t hold hose in place

UPDATE: After reaching out a couple of times, we did hear back from customer service. They did not acknowledge that the clips breaking is a common issue but did offer us a refund and said we can order that part when it becomes available (it’s currently out of stock). For now, we’ve followed the tip from another reviewer and screwed the hose to the panel and it’s holding the hose in place.Besides this one issue for folks who have horizontal windows, there’s nothing wrong with the unit. It’s quiet and works great and the app is a great way to manage our baby’s room temperature at night without going into the room. Overall, good purchase.ORIGINAL REVIEW: I am happy to update this review if customer service would just call me back and fix my issue. We bought two units recently to install on sliding horizontal windows. In order to do that, we have to use a plastic adapter that has four clips that attach the hose to the panel. One unit came with one clip already broken. We were very careful installing both units, but in a matter of days most of the clips have broken off from the simplest touch. Now both ACs are practically useless because the adapters are not attaching the hose to the panel and the hose keeps falling out. We’ve used duct tape but the hose is too heavy to stay in place. We called customer service a few weeks back and they somehow seem to have never heard of this issue (even though I’m seeing reviews mentioning it here) and said they’ll look into sending us parts. We have not heard anything back. I understand part of the product design or parts may be faulty, but if your customer service isn’t doing what they can to correct that, then your product deserves less than 1 star.

    Cheap plastic, poorly engineered

The unit has been running for 1 day. It is cooling down my 750 Sq foot condo, attached to the bedroom window. The set up took about an hour to figure out. Such cheap garbage, flimsy plastic, flimsy window opening covers, and crazy stickers on the foam for window edges will definitely do some damage to the window slide operation when removed. Theses stickers are a 1 time use, clearly not designed for seasonal use and breakdown in winter seasons. The plastic part that clips to the window opening cover is junk. Poor clipping falls out if not adjusted perfectly. So be careful a pet might knock it out and dangerous gas could fill your home. Another issue is the drainage. The unit will produce condensation. You have a choice to set up a hose to drain…..where? Out the window? The pex tube they give you is 2 ft long and wont reach anywhere. Or into the floor drain in a basement. Otherwise the unit will collect the condensation in a container, which needs to be drained periodically. How? The drain plug is at the very bottom of a very heavy unit. The instructions imply that you roll it to the drain in the floor. Who has that in their house? Except for the basement. I have no idea how I’m going to drain it. This doesn’t seem practical long term. Over priced for the poor engineering.

Simple, reasonably priced, and low running costs (including filters)

An important consideration for devices such as this is the running costs; not just electricity, but replacement bulbs, filters, and so on.Do your own research, but I have purchased five of these for various rooms of the house due to both the reasonable up-front cost of the device, plus the running costs. We vacuum the filters regularly to extend their life-span, and the bulbs last for years between needing replacement. My only complaint is that the device is a bit loud. This makes sense, though: an air purifier is basically a less-efficient fan than runs air through a filter, and that adds noise to the air-moving process. That said, I don’t think this device is any louder than similar filter-type purifying devices.

Very quiet but don’t love the window panel assembly

I’m very happy with how quiet the unit is. My old one I wouldn’t use while sleeping because it was so loud but this one is just white noise so it’s worth the money. The downside is the window panel installation is very complicated for sliding windows. The instructions want you to put the insulated foam on the window track, but it would be a semi permanent placement and I would never apply sticky foam to my window frames that would be insanely difficult to remove as it falls apart. So I put the foam on the AC window installation panel sides but now it is no longer adjustable. But at least my window frames aren’t ruined.I wish they would have come up with an easier installation for the panel itself because the unit is very nice quality.

Kit sucks, unit works, assembly 4+hrs

So the unit works (so far). It’s louder than The NY Times article made it out to be, mildly disappointing but not terribly. HOWEVER, I have spent less time building whole IKEA living room sets (bed, desk, lamps, etc) than I did on this window kit. It took me over 4 hours and immediately, the small plastic clips that hold the unit together snapped apart *while I was connecting them properly* AND when part of it dropped down inside the unprotected hose, and into the fan, I disassembled the unit and a large bolt that seemed to belong nowhere randomly slid out? I hope it wasn’t necessary for the unit’s function because this was expensive, and it’s for our renter’s room.I didn’t expect it to be beautiful, but I did expect more. It was disappointing when very important pieces broke immediately and now I am having to duct tape this already hideous hose to our nice new windows. It has taken me a while to compose myself and write a fair review, and now that I am not seething I figured it was time. In addition, the instructions are so poorly worded, I had to have someone else read them too, to make sure it wasn’t just me. It was like word-salad at some point.Good luck, buyer beware- and consider the amount of time and struggle it may take you to install. If I had known the full extent of what others had been leaving comments about I would have chosen a different unit but now it’s in my house, it’s heavy and I am too tired to take it back down two flights of stairs, and return it on my own.

    SO FAR AMAZINGLY AWESOME

I live in Oklahoma, I used to check the weather every day bc my old ac sucked. ATM it’s been only a few weeks since installing it. Well it’s 105 today and I have a blanket on bc I also have fans going to help send the ac into my living room bc I have it in my kitchen. I do wish the exhaust hose was a bit more flexible bc the only window I have that opens is in the kitchen and it’s turned towards my living room but the duct is a bit of a pain to get it closer. But so far it’s been great!! Had a bit of issue with the remote but I think it’s bc I hadn’t been aiming correctly. I highly recommend! I wish I had waited a bit to get the ac/heat one.

    Better than my window unit

I liked the idea of inverter control technology in a portable A/C unit. I have a heat pump dryer made by Midea and despite early issues I love it so I took a chance on the A/C unit. We just had a heat wave this spring and the quality and efficiency paired with its low noise level blew me away. My old window unit wouldn’t get cool enough without a little modification and it was always loud. I like my room to be around 17-18 degrees C. This unit decided that it could be on super low and keep my room at 16.5 while it was 26 out side. It did it so well I had to turn it up a notch. Being able to keep tabs on it over my phone is nice also but whit the remote control not ver necessary.

great unit. does exactly what i wanted in a tough location, an uninsulated patio in direct sun mid to late afternoon. quiet and efficient as advertised. also a good looking unit as well. haven’t tried the Bluetooth feature yet cuz i don’t really need it. installation was a bit difficult because i have sliding windows taller than the material provided, which i found flimsy. bet it works great on double hung windows though. i had to go to lowes and buy the clear hurricane plastic sheet and fabricate my own set up for the exhaust. the exhaust is very stiff, btw, and pulls pretty hard on the plastic clips (in my situation). I zip tied all the clips to reinforce the connections. i would recommend buying it.

Great unit, but poor quality sliding window adaptor kit; be prepared to resort to DIY improvisation

I have owned this air conditioner for over a year, and while we don’t overtax it too much living here in the Pacific Northwest, there still have been plenty of times when I have used it to cool down my roughly 450 ft.² office. We live in a townhome where most of it is air-conditioned by mini split units, but the air conditioning system doesn’t reach this room. So we installed this unit for six months out of the year to cool just this room. Compared to the Whytner 14000 units we typically found (usually being sold used around the neighborhood when people move), this unit is next level. It’s much quieter; it feels more solid, more predictable. The Whytner unit worked well but would make so much noise (and one off sounds!) that I just assumed it was going to crap out at any point. I also found that you had to be careful when moving those units because I bought them used when they were working fine and got them home, only to discover the compressor had somehow died in trasit or the electrical controls became inoperable. So, comparatively speaking, this Midea unit is fantastic. With one exception: if you use the sliding window adapter, it is a piece of crap that will make you use swearwords you didn’t even know you knew. And once the flimsy tabs break off of the sliding window adapter part that is supposed to plug into the relatively cheap plastic window sliding piece that it is supposed to plug into, you will almost certainly have to come up with your own improvised repairs. I drilled some holes in the sliding window adapter part using some long sheet metal screws to hold the contraption together. Which I’m sure would void the warranty. It is the Achilles’ heel of this otherwise great AC unit. I feel like Midea phoned it in regarding this sliding window adapter kit—a real shame. Because outside of that, I would’ve given it five stars.

    Good with one flaw

As an air conditioner it’s been good so far. I’ve used it for 2 summers now with storage I between. It stays consistently under 15A, with a peak at 14A according to home assistant. The app works. The remote is quirky but works. It’s relatively easy to maintain. You have to use a bucket with this model and keep a pipe connected to it otherwise water will overflow. Here’s the flaw. The way the condensation tray was designed doesn’t take advantage of gravity well enough. So what can happen is it will overflow and dump water into the base where there’s another drain plug. But this will also leak onto the floor. So how to fix it? Lean the air conditioner by back by a few degrees letting gravity do it’s job and sending water the top over flow connector without issue. Also I recommend you buy a 22×22 plastic tray to catch any stray drips. I only figured this out after finding pools of water on the right side of the unit where the pump is. I put a block under the front which tips it up enough that gravity does the rest and it’s been working fine ever since. Hopefully I get a few more years out of it.Internally it seems like a good unit though somewhat difficult to take apart and service.

In the land of air conditions, this one is already Queen! (updated)

We’ve owned 3 different models of portable air conditioners over the years. They were all loud and collected tons of water — either in an ugly bucket or on the floor. I did a ton of research before buying a new unit and settled on this one (read the Wirecutter review for more detail). My spouse has arthritis so keeping our place a comfortable temperature is critical.QUIET: Bc of our apartment and windows, we have to have this thing right next to the TV. That was a problem with other units, but not this one. It is VERY quiet. I cannot believe it’s so quiet, even on the highest setting. I have tinnitus and am very sensitive to fan noises and this doesn’t bother me at all.SETTINGS: Setting it to auto is amazing. It turns itself up and down quietly to keep the room at the set temperature much better than any other unit.COOLING: Cools our entire 550 square foot apartment evenly (we do have fans to push the air into the 2 bedrooms). The swing setting really distributes the cold air.HOSES: The dual hose is great, but required a larger window opening than most ACs. So far we have not had to drain this but we also haven’t had super humid weather yet. It comes with a hose to drain and I’m hoping we can avoid using a bucket this year and drain it out the window (but the window is about 10 inches higher than the drain, so I’m not sure. Will update).UPDATE: We’ve now had 1 week of very humid weather. The AC has been running nearly 24/7 and we have NOT had to drain it. This is crazy. Is it magic? How is it actually dispursing the water outside the window in the outtake? Our old ACs would have filled a 5 gallon bucket each day at least. I’m impressed!ALEXA: This syncs beautifully with Alexa. I can turn the AC on and off, and set the temperature from anywhere, including my phone.I will say the first unit we got was NOT quiet. It sounded like a bicycle with a playing card stuck in it. It was definitely a fluke (we just happened to get a bad unit or something fell inside the fan) and Amazon took it back and sent us a new one with no hassle. So far, highly recommended. I will update as our long hot summer continues!

It gets the room cold, however…

After a ton of research, I decided to spring for the dual direction portable AC unit. Being the most efficient of the ones I researched it delivers as expected. The setup instructions were simple enough; though I could see some folks struggling with the larger than usual vent duct. Ample weatherstripping and gap foam are provided. Even on the highest fan setting at the lowest temperature the unit is quieter than any unit I’ve ever heard. On a 105F/40C day, it can cool my large room in about 15 min.Not every feature is intuitive. The timer on and off feature is great, but I think it could be consolidated to one button – an either/or situation. The remote is clunky. Often it doesn’t respond to input. Sometimes it gets “locked,” requiring me to turn the unit off and then back on to reset the controller. Not a perfect item, but not a terrible item in the least.

This is the one to get. Super cool!

06/04/2023 UPDATE: I’ve had the unit Since Aug of 2021, and it’s up on a table to raise it higher so I could intall the drain hose to the unit, and have the drain hose exit the window. About a week ago, I started having issues with it throwing a P1 code, drain pan full. Well, I checked outside, and water was still slowly dripping. I powered off and unplugged the unit, and it word ok for a while, then threw another P1 code. So, I figure after nearly 2 years of constant daily use, the drain plug/tube connector at the bottom may have an issue. We used a skinny wire nylon brush, and stuck it as far up the connector as possible, and ohhh man, it pulled out some nasty gunk. This was probably backing up the drain plug tube into the “drain pan” because there was some water down at the bottom of the unit. Once I got all the gunk out with the nylon brush wire, I took my air compressor and a generic air sprayer tool and blew compressed air up into the drain hole several times. There were also two other small tubes – one near the coils and one a bit further down, and also blew them out with compressed air. Buttoned everything back up, and booyah, no more P1 code!! I really do love this AC, it keeps the room super cold, and saves money on the central AC. I know some of the units seem to have QC issues, but this one is still rocking strong, just needed to clean out the drain plug as explained above. So, if you start getting a P1 out of nowhere, when everything was fine and you’re using a draining tube — this may be your issue. Hope to save someone some time with this fix. Cool! Will update again if anything new happens.I rarely write reviews, but this deserves a review. Here in the deep south, it gets extremely hot and humid. Central A/C bills can go through the roof. This unit is perfect for the master bedroom, and we don’t have to run the central A/C during the daytime. Installation was straightforward. If you use it a lot, you WILL need to connect the supplied clear tubing to the drain spout and run it out the window–we just cut a hole in the size of the tube in the window exhaust plate, and it works great. Had to raise the unit up a bit for gravity to do it’s thing. This unit cools FAST and efficient. The remote is decent. And best of all, I can get the bedroom to 62 degrees in the dead of summer if I want to, no problem. Highly recommended.

    Not quiet but works great

I bought this for a studio so the area is much smaller than what it’s designed for but I have no seperate rooms to seal up. Bought it with the intention of keeping it for a few years when I’ll hopefully move to a bigger place.Unit has definitely been getting louder as time passes and I honestly feel like the filter isn’t going to be enough to keep it maintained long term. Will definitely need to be opened up and cleaned out after a year or two.Works super well though and relatively easy to set up.Be careful with the ventilation hose/pipe. Easy to split the corners of it when extending to the window but I’m planning on insulating it anyway so not a deal breaker for me.App won’t work with it on 5ghz wifi so make sure you have dual band or 2.5ghz if that’s a dealbreaker for you. Personally I’ll be buying a new router as my Shaw one doesn’t work with most smart devices.Definitely recommend the AC unit.

Works great but poor designs and cheap plastic

Upon arrival to my home, the box was a bit beat up. After opening it up and taking everything out, I realized just how big it was but it fits in my small room just fine. It came with a totally busted wheel so that really sucks. It also came with a broken piece that clamps the hose to the window panel. It stays in fine I guess. Otherwise, it works great. Within 3 minutes or so, I was already able to feel a decrease of temperature in my room. It really works well cooling things down. I ran it for like 15 minutes and I already turned it off because my room was at a comfortable temperature. It’s incredibly quiet. On high it’s still quieter than my box fan on the lowest speed. That’s real neat. Installation wasn’t too hard. Instructions were not the clearest but I think I got it all in right okay. I made a big goof up of using the adhesive foam because I was not planning on having this as a more permanent installation. I want to be able to take it all out my window when it rains or it’s winter. The adhesive foam totally messed up my window. The remote does not work at all. Put the batteries in but it does nothing to control the unit. I didn’t find anything in the papers provided of how to, you know, make the remote work. You can see in the photo the remote does not match the unit. It’s like 5 feet from my desk. It’s not the end of the world to get up and turn it on and off. When fitting it in the window vertically, the adapter used for that is not great. It’s lose, it wiggles, there’s gaps between it, the panel and the hose. It’s just more cheap plastic that broke pretty quick. I’ve been using duct tape and super glue trying to keep it all connected. It’s not ideal.Despite these flaws that came with this product, it works. It cools down my room really well. However I think they could have done a significantly better job designing a few things to make them work and fit better. Stronger materials goes a long way too.

    What I discovered

I purchased this item to replace a former portable unit which after 4 years had lost its cooling capability due to the refrigerant decline. The one feature that I like is the phone app because it makes it easy to turn the unit off and as well as set up the unit. There is a slight learning curve for setting up for wifi. The unit is used in the bedroom at night to keep the room cool while the rest of the condo is set for a higher nighttime temperature. If there are any criticisms it would be on the window apparatus which takes time to get adjusted and put together.. Another issue is the so called insulation provided which you tape onto the plastic window cover. It is less than 1/4 inch and in my opinion does little to insulate. My solution was to purchase Owens Corning Foam Board about $14 and cut a piece that I could place on the inside of the window. In my application i used 1/2 inch thickness. After the heat season is finished I will be making similar piece for the outside surface. The tube assembly doesn’t exactually seal to the window assembly. There are cracks at the boot fitting areas where it attaches to the window assembly. To seal this I purchased from Amazon E/Fusing 900 moldable silicon putty. It is wide but you can cut it with scissors it to the width you want and apply it to the inside of the assembly boot.

It has a “big presence” in the room.

Cools down room quickly . Relatively quiet. Needs to drain into a bucket.

    Pretty quiet!

We use this in our downstairs kitchen & TV/family room space. We can watch TV without needing to turn up the TV. The dehumidifier setting does not seem to work as well as we would like so we primarily use the cool setting. It is bigger than two other units we use up stairs but they are much louder. Over all I am happy with this purchase.

    Excellent Portable AC

I’m a huge fan (no pun intended) of Midea products and this unit is no exception. Recently, my AC has been giving me a ton of issues and since I live in FL it’s not uncommon for the temperature to reach 80+ degrees inside of my home. Opening the windows doesn’t help since it just let’s in a ton of humidity since I live inland and not on the coast. I picked up this portable AC in order to cool down different rooms such as the living room when relaxing and my office since I work from home.Upon arrival the box was slightly damaged but honestly, I don’t blame them for this as I have had several issues with boxes arriving damaged due to the carrier. Everything inside the box was well packaged and the unit itself arrived safely without defects.Installation was really easy. I was able to get it up and running in less than 30 minutes. Midea includes additional foam insulation pieces so that way the unit can be moved to different locations. The wheels on the unit make this process even easier, pending that you’re not moving it up and down stairs.Despite the unit being rated for up to 450 sq ft of cooling it surprisingly cooled my entire downstairs area which is close to 1,000 sq ft. It is an open floor plan so that has a lot to do with it. However, I literally watch the temperature on my thermostat go from 80 degrees to 75 in about 35-40 minutes which is really impressive for such a quiet unit.Outside of being a wonderful portable AC, it has smarthome functionality, and can link to Google Home or Amazon Alexa. From there, you can create routines or control the unit by voice which is pretty neat. For my needs, I typically just use the remote since it has a nice solid build with a backlit LCD display that makes it easy for adjusting the temperature or switching modes. If I had to pick 1 thing to gripe about it would be the stiffness of the air hose but I have a feeling it will loosen up over time and become easier to angle and adjust. Overall, I can’t recommend this unit enough. It does exactly what it says and exceeded my expectations. They also stand behind their products and offer a great warranty. If something does happen to go wrong within the covered period they will do everything they can to make it right and get you back up and running. I’ve had to take advantage of this before in the past and it was painless.

    Venting system is crap

I happily ordered this unit after a very satisfying experience with the Midea U-shaped inverter window AC. Now there is a real piece of engineering. First I must say I love the cooling efficiency and the ease of operation with this portable and it is much quieter than any other portable I’ve tried. I actually can get a good night’s sleep while it is running. Now for the bad part. It is a nightmare to install in a sliding window. It also constantly either falls out of the window completely or the vent attachment points come apart. So disappointed with the poor quality of the window vent especially after the great quality of the window AC. You will have to be very creative in order to keep the vent in place.

Works well, much quieter than my old ever star

Did arrived damaged though with misaligned panel and cracks/broken decorative pieces, but was able to get a partial refund since it’s only cosmetic damage, works for me.

    Maybe a lemon

So I bought this thing. And it works great and I loved it so much. But after roughly 2 months. It just stopped working all together. Now the company did issue me a full refund. Which I should get in a few days. So for the most part everything’s ok. I don’t know if I just got a lemon. But that’s what I suspect. Other than the issues I had with it. It worked great. It would blast cold air. And it was able to handle the Texas heat above triple digits. The parts for installing the exhaust in the window do appear cheap. But they work. Also I would use the hose they provide to drain it into a bucket full time. And put a plank of wood under the front castor to lean it back so it drains properly. I might buy another one once I get the refund because even though it broke. It worked great up until that point. I’m just going to also buy the Amazon 4 year warranty or whatever. I hope this helps.
